Water plays a fundamental role in nearly every system of the body and following a treatment, where the body may shift into a state of increased regulation and balance, adequate hydration becomes especially important. Before Covid I used to routinely offer clients a glass of water after every treatment but as I wasn’t allowed to for a long while during the pandemic, I got out of the habit. Please always ask me for a glass if you don’t manage to bring your own water bottle with you.

Water as your Body’s Main Transport Medium

Approximately 60% of the adult human body is composed of water. It acts as the primary transport medium for nutrients, oxygen, hormones and metabolic waste. The circulatory and lymphatic systems rely heavily on sufficient fluid levels to function efficiently.

Holistic therapies aim to support your body’s natural regulatory mechanisms; often promoting relaxation, improved circulation and lymphatic movement. When these systems are worked during a treatment, metabolic by-products can be mobilised more effectively. Adequate water intake supports the kidneys, liver and lymphatic system in processing and eliminating waste products through urination, perspiration and bowel function.

Supporting your Lymphatic System

Unlike the cardiovascular system, the lymphatic system has no central pump. It relies on movement, muscle contraction, breathing and sufficient hydration to circulate lymph fluid. Treatments may encourage lymphatic flow indirectly through relaxation and nervous system regulation.

Water helps maintain the fluidity of lymph, supporting immune surveillance and waste removal at a cellular level. Dehydration can slow lymphatic movement, potentially reducing the efficiency of these processes following treatment.

Cellular Hydration and Communication

Every cell in the body depends on water to maintain structure and function. Cellular hydration supports:

  • Nutrient absorption
  • Waste removal
  • Electrical signalling
  • Enzymatic and metabolic reactions

Holistic therapies are thought to influence the nervous system; encouraging a shift from sympathetic (fight-or-flight) dominance toward parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) activity. This state supports cellular repair and regulation; processes that require optimal hydration to occur effectively.

Nervous System Regulation and Detoxification Symptoms

After holistic treatments some clients report temporary reactions such as fatigue, headache, increased urination or increased thirst. These responses are often linked to nervous system shifts, circulatory changes, or mild dehydration rather than so called “toxins” being released.

Water supports nervous system function by maintaining electrolyte balance and aiding cerebral blood flow. Drinking water post-treatment can help reduce the likelihood or intensity of post-treatment reactions and supports overall comfort and ‘symptom’ reduction.

Kidney Function and Waste Elimination

The kidneys filter approximately 180 litres of fluid per day; reabsorbing what the body needs and excreting waste. Adequate hydration is essential for this process. After reflexology in particular, when circulation may be enhanced and metabolic activity supported, water intake helps ensure that waste products are excreted efficiently rather than recirculated.
